Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Those who recite these thirty Thiruppavai hymns,
sung by Goda Devi (Andal) of the flower-like town of Srivilliputhur,
in praise of Madhava (Kesava)
the Lord who churned the ocean of milk —

Will be blessed by Thirumal, the Lord with red lotus eyes
and broad shoulders like mountains.
His divine grace will fill their lives with joy and prosperity —
O Paavai, may we ever live in His blissful grace!

Meaning in English

Early in the morning, we come to serve You, O Govinda,
and praise Your sacred lotus feet — please listen to our prayer!

We were born in the humble clan that tends Your cows,
and we are bound to serve You forever.
Do not refuse us this chance for service, O merciful one!

Grant us the Parai (divine blessing) not just for this birth,
but through all births to come.
We shall always be united with You,
serving only You, desiring nothing else — O Paavai!

Meaning in English

We follow the herds and wander through the forests,
simple cowherd girls without much wisdom or learning.
Yet by great fortune, we have come close to You, O Govinda,
who are flawless and complete.

Our bond with You can never be broken!
Even if we have called You in our childish ignorance,
do not take offense, O compassionate Lord.
Shower Your grace upon us and grant us the Parai (divine blessing) —
O Paavai, Lord of mercy!

O Lord resting upon the sacred banyan leaf,

Rise and look upon us, O radiant one —

If You but glance at us with grace,
all our sins and sorrows will vanish — O Paavai, bless us with that gaze!
