Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

O noble girl, who has taken a vow for the heavenly path!
You do not open your door or speak even a word to us.
Have you too fallen into a deep sleep
like the demon Kumbhakarna, who was cursed to slumber?

O lady adorned with the Tulasi garland,
you are blessed by Lord Narayana,
the giver of all virtues and grace.
Rise, O wise one, open your door and join us joyfully —
O Paavai, come and worship the Lord with us!
