Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

O guardian of Nandagopan’s palace,
standing proudly with banners and festoons waving high!
O doorkeeper of that divine house, open the gem-studded doors!

We are humble cowherd maidens who have come to sing and seek the Lord’s grace.
The wondrous Krishna, the Manivannan, promised us His blessings yesterday.

We come pure in heart, calling to awaken Him —
speak not harshly, dear one, but kindly open the door!
O Paavai, let us worship together the Lord of Mathura!
