Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

O Nappinnai, daughter-in-law of mighty Nandagopa,
strong as a proud elephant, adorned with fragrant hair,
open your beautiful door!

The roosters are crowing everywhere,
the cuckoos are singing sweetly on the treetops,
and the world is filled with morning light.

O lovely lady with red lotus hands and shining bangles,
come joyfully, remove your ornaments,
and open the door — let us sing of your beloved Lord Krishna!
