Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

The lamps are shining bright beside the ivory bed,
where soft cushions adorn the fivefold couch.

O Nappinnai, with fragrant flower-decked hair,
You rest close to the lotus-chested Lord Krishna
open Your lips and wake Him up!

O beautiful one with dark, kohl-lined eyes,
how long will You both lie asleep?
You who can never bear separation from Him,
this delay does not befit You — O Paavai, awaken with joy!
