Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

O sleepy girl! Don’t you hear the sounds around?
The cows are mooing, the bulls are calling out,
the women with jingling bangles churn curd in joy,
their songs fill the morning air.

The fragrance of their soft hair spreads everywhere,
and the sound of their churning blends with the conch.
O noble girl! Arise — sing of Lord Narayana (Kesava),
the divine Lord who protects us all.
Open your door and join us, O Paavai!
