Thiruppavai Lyrics in English

Thiruppavai is a collection of 30 pasurams composed by Sri Andal (Godha Devi), the only woman among the twelve Alvars.
She was born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, and grew up with deep devotion to Lord Vishnu.
From her childhood, Andal dreamt of marrying the Lord and expressed her love through these beautiful pasurams.
The Thiruppavai pasurams are sung during Margazhi month (Dhanurmasam) as prayers for purity, peace, and divine grace.
Each pasuram teaches the joy of devotion and surrender to Lord Narayana.

Meaning in English

O Paavai, wake up!
The eastern sky is bright, the young buffaloes are roaming the fields,
the cowherd boys are leaving for their work, calling to one another.
We came to call you before they go too far!

Come, let us sing of the Lord who slew the fierce demon Kesi,
who tore apart the mouth of the mighty horse demon.
Let us worship the Lord of all gods,
and receive His blessings with joy and devotion —
O Paavai, arise and join us!
